The Department of Angiography of MC Erebouni Medical Center was founded in February 2003 and named after our compatriot, Academician of the Russian Federation Bagrat Alekyan. The department, in compliance with international standards, provides 24-hour medical services, diagnostics and treatment of patients with cardiovascular diseases in need of planned and emergency medical care. The department has all the conditions for the diagnosis of cardiovascular diseases and interventional surgeries.
In terms of coronary artery stenting, MC Erebouni is the leader, 45% of the interventions performed- are cases of acute heart attack.Angiography is the X-ray imaging of blood vessels using contrast agents, which is generally done to see if there's a restriction in blood flow going to the heart and elimination of existing pathology. The Department of Angiography also performs unique interventions in the Republic. Pulmonary artery stent has been implanted in Armenia, in MC Erebouni, for the first time.
The department also carries out:
- detection of the location of a blockage or narrowing of blood vessels
- measurement of the oxygen concentration in blood, oximetry (assessment of hemodynamics)
- heart tissue biopsy for further examination
- detection of congenital heart defects assessment of the contractile function of the heart
- evaluation of the heart valves
- contrast visualization of the aorta and peripheral vessels
- angiography of the aorta and its branches
- angiography of carotid and intracranial arteries
- angiography of renal arteries
- angiography of the arteries of the uterus
- angiography of the arteries of the upper and lower extremities.
During intervention catheterization of heart and blood vessels in the department, the following therapeutic interventions are performed:
- opening of a narrowed or blocked artery or angioplasty. (balloon dilatation and stenting of coronary arteries),
- ablation in cardiac arrhythmias
- stenting of stenotic peripheral artery, including renal artery
- embolization of arteries feeding the tumor (artificial blockage)
- embolization of the uterine arteries in myoma
- closing of the defects in the septum of the heart and in great vessels
Endovascular interventions are carried out with the use of sedation and they are painless. The main approach used in the department is transradial access - through the radial artery, which not only reduces the rate of local complications after interventions, but also is more comfortable for the patients. In case of endovascular interventions (angioplasty, stenting) the hospital stay may be extended up to 2-3 days, depending on the patient's condition.
