A new approach of early stage cervical cancer treatment has been implemented in Gynecological Oncology Service of NAIRI Medical Canter recently.
Professor Michael Hockel from University Hospital of Leipzig proposed a new modification of the radical hysterectomy called Total Mesometrial Resection (TMMR). This technique is based on the removal of those genital tissues that have developed from a common structure in the embryo (called the Müllerian compartment). Total resection of that embryological compartment obtains 15-20% better survival rates and allows avoiding adjuvant radiation therapy in locally advanced disease.
The TMMR accepted as a standard of cervical cancer surgery in many leading academic institutions of Germany. Now this kind of treatment is available in Armenia as well.
