In response to the increasing prevalence of lung cancer in our region, the pulmonary surgery service has recently undergone modernization and reorganization, resulting in the creation of the new Department of Thoracic Surgery, now led by Armen Hanoyan.
The department is fully equipped with all necessary technology and systems. It features a team of skilled, innovative doctors who are implementing ambitious and forward-thinking projects.
Surgeon Sergey Abramyan from the Department of Thoracic Surgery has performed an endobronchial ultrasound examination of the lymph nodes in the mediastinum for the first time, along with the collection of lymph node material. This groundbreaking, non-surgical endoscopic procedure is designed to investigate lung and mediastinal tumors.
Utilizing the Hitachi ARIETTA S60 endobronchial ultrasound system, a special needle is employed to extract samples from the patient's neck, providing crucial information about the tumor for further histological analysis. An ultrasound sensor attached to the bronchoscope allows for precise sampling from the targeted area, enabling the attending physician to clearly determine the cancer's stage and type, thus facilitating the selection of the most appropriate treatment method.
Previously, an open surgical procedure was required to identify the type and stage of lung tumors and the presence of metastases in the mediastinal lymph nodes, which was often traumatic and necessitated extended recovery times for patients.
Experts regard this unique intervention as a significant advancement not only for Erebuni Medical Center but also for the overall healthcare system in Armenia. It marks a new chapter in the early detection and effective treatment of oncological diseases, offering enhanced professional and internationally recognized research opportunities for cancer patients. This will ultimately lead to timely and more effective medical care for a larger number of patients.
