Kyphoplasty for the treatment of vertebral fractures

In 18.10.17 a 50-year- old patient A.M. was admitted to Neurosurgery Department of MC Erebouni with L1 vertebral body fracture as a result of domestic accident. There was a wedge-shaped deformity of the body of vertebra II ° without neurologic complications.

It was decided to carry out balloon kyphoplasty of the broken vertebral body.

The method is similar to vertebroplasty in which bone cement is injected into fractured or affected vertebral body, however it doesn`t allow to fix vertebral deformation.

Balloon kyphoplasty allows with minimally invasive procedure to achieve the best result: a narrow pathway is made into the fractured bone with a hollow instrument, balloon is guided through the instrument into the vertebral body. Next, the liquid is inflated into it to elevate the fractured vertebral deformation. Inflation of the balloon creates a cavity within the vertebral body for the injection a bone cement. The cavity is filled with bone cement holds the vertebral body in place, which is a common complication of another method – vertebroplasty.

In 18.10.17 the balloon kyphoplasty was carried out by the Head of Department of Spine Pathology & Vertebral Surgery Dr. K.G. Momjyan, MD.

Next day the patient was discharged from the hospital in satisfactory condition. Balloon kyphoplasty is applied in medical practice around the world in the last decade. In October 2017 the Department of Spine Pathology & Vertebral Surgery carried out such kind of surgery for the first time.

P.S. In the last month by this method in Department of Spine Pathology & Vertebral Surgery of MC Erebouni have successfully operated two more patients.
