In 04. 04. 2017, a patient N.I., 70 years old has admitted to MC Erebouni with complaints to general weakness, shortness of breath during physical activity and heartbeats. Echocardiogram revealed volumetric formation in the left atrium of an inhomogeneous consistence with even edges measuring 6 x 4 cm, fixed on a wide pedicle to interatrial septum (left atrium myxoma). The formation was mobile, and caused partial obstruction of mitral valve with development of mitral stenosis of 1,5-2 cm.
In 11.04.2017 under the supervision of the Head of Cardiovascular Surgery Department of MC Erebouni V.Kh. Gasparyan, MD, PhD the patient was operated. Superior Transseptal Approach to the left atrial cavity was used. In finger revision of the cavity, tumor-like formation was observed with fixation to the interatrial septum in the area of the oval window. At the place of fixation on the wide pedicle ( 3 x 3 cm) to interatrial septum excision of the tumor was performed within healthy tissues followed by removal of the tumor from the left atrium cavity with a single block, measured about 6 x 4 cm.
Histological examination of the formation confirmed the diagnosis of fibromyxoma.
The patient was discharged on the 7th day in a satisfactory condition.
Myxoma is a benign tumor, most often localized in the left atrium. Myxomas of large sizes are extremely rare. The risk of these tumors lay in the possible detachment of the tumor or its part with development of embolic complications, as well as development of total obstruction of mitral valve with cardiac arrest.
Such kind of surgery was successfully performed in Cardiovascular Surgery Department of MC Erebouni back in 2005. The high experience and professionalism of the specialists of MC Erebouni allows even in the most complicated clinical cases to show results corresponding to world standards.
